Nov 17* w/Oakland Group……Dec 15
Opening Discussion Topic for November 17:
According to Silicon Valley Bank, 2021 was the largest healthcare venture fundraising year ever, with over $86.3 billion raised – more than 2.5 times than that raised in 2019. Of that, $36.3B went into Biopharma; HealthTech captured nearly $28.2B; over $13B funded Diagnostic Tools, and nearly $8.8B went into Medical Devices. And it’s estimated that only 0.05% of startups raise any Venture Capital at all!
It takes even more conviction to be an Angel Investor, although according to the Center for Venture Research at University of New Hampshire, Angels annually fund 63,000+ startups with over $23 billion!
Fortunately for our Group Discussion on lessons learned from funding and investing in the Future of Healthcare, several Round Table Members have raised expansion capital for their healthcare ventures from Angels, VCs, LBOs, the public market, and even from retained earnings. Our Featured Member Presenter, George Carpenter, has done all of the above! And now, as President of CGI Biomed Investments, he’s providing ongoing consulting, board membership and an investment platform for med-tech initiatives for organizations, including Sanofi Aventis, Ambry Genetics, Johnson & Johnson, Elan Pharmaceuticals, and Tech Coast Angels. You’ll definitely want to hear his story – even if you run a nonprofit, as the marketplace, it is a changin’.
George Carpenter is ABL’s only CEO Member to have won our ABBY Award twice. First for WorkWell Systems, in 2004, for their occupational health programs for the Fortune 500. And again, in 2016, for MYnd Analytics, a breakthrough, predictive biomarker platform for reducing trial and error prescribing of psychotropic drugs. As the Founder/CEO of multiple biomed startups, their aggregated exit value has been over $1 billion.
