Is that a Robot at your door?
by Mimi Grant

It's not enough that motorists and pedestrians need to dodge Bird and Lime scooters, Amazon recently announced it will begin delivering some packages to Prime members in Irvine with a "small number" of its rolling, robotic Scout delivery vehicles. The initial automated robot deliveries will only occur Monday through Friday, during daylight hours, and will initially include an "Amazon Scout Ambassador" (I think that's a human) to make sure that packages actually get delivered. Irvine is the Scout's first expansion market beyond Amazon's Seattle headquarters. And, while Amazon anticipates eventually it will use drones to make its deliveries, in the meantime the rolling robotic Scouts will soon be replacing larger human-driven vehicles whisking those free Same-Day, One-Day, and Two-Day shipped packages your way.

And, if you're flying in or out of SFO, stop by Terminal 3 to take a gander at Briggo's latest barista. The automated gourmet coffee kiosk operates 24/7 without any on-site staff. . . CLICK HERE TO READ REST OF BLOG.

BUSINESS LEADERS
Dave Berkus on: Boards, Coaching, Messy Problems & Hiring vs. Partnering

In Does your board give you good advice?, Dave discusses the importance of the composition of your board, and whether you should you defer to outside board members, he also provides a story of an unbalanced board. Dave also discusses boards in Let your board help with "what" and "why" - but rarely "how".
And, in Where's your team playbook? Hmm?, Dave suggests that if you have a plan but do not share it with your direct reports, then they are acting without motivation toward mutual goals, without metrics to measure their progress toward the goals, and without the leadership that makes great winners. Other recent posts from Dave include: Can your team overcome messy problems? and Hire for your core. Partner for the rest. (Dave Berkus, Monrovia & West LA)

The Joy Factory on: Water-Resistant vs. Waterproof iPad & Tablet Cases

In Defining IP68 Rating or Waterproof Tablet Protection, The Joy Factory explains what the difference is in these terms, and how you can know if your purchase can handle water at all. There are standards as to how water resistant something is - seen commonly on cameras, headsets and smartphones - giving it the power to withstand the average splash or light rain shower. Waterproof, on the other hand, isn't designated unless it can be submerged. You need to look closely for the “IP rating/code," or Ingress Protection Rating - the terms that are technically used for air and water tightness classifications. WorkDone on: The Social Impact of Ethical AI

In The Social Impact of Ethical AI, WorkDone's Joe Rogers shares that people derive meaning in their lives from three things: meaningful relationships, passionate interests, and meaningful work, according to bioethicist Ezekiel Emanuel. Therefore, the preservation and consideration of human dignity within artificial intelligence and technology is the human thing to do. AI is actually an opportunity for people to find enrichment in alternate, more fulfilling career paths. For example, autonomous trucks are being blamed for destroying the truck-driving occupation, which also happens to be one of America's deadliest. An increase in self-driving trucks means more repairs, charging stations, and opportunities we haven't even dreamt of yet, and more truckers returning safely to their families each day. When Henry Ford invented the car, he didn't expect skiing to become a spinoff industry. The car created many new opportunities we never conceived possible - the self-driving car will likely be no different. Joe concludes, “A rich new world of work can safely be explored if we get AI ethics under regulatory control before it gets away from us and becomes a dystopian disaster." (Joe Rogers, West LA)

It is important that affected systems are patched as quickly as possible, and downloads for these can be found in the Microsoft Security Update Guide. Windows 10 users that have enabled automatic updates are already protected. For those who update manually, they can click the search button and type "Windows Update" to access the update tool. Administration Extends Limited Reprieve on U.S. Tech Sales to Huawei

The Trump administration has extended a limited reprieve on U.S. technology sales to Huawei, even as questions remain over how much of an effect broader sanctions are having on the Chinese technology giant. Huawei has become enmeshed in the trade war between Washington and Beijing, with the President showing a willingness to use the sanctions as a bargaining chip. The U.S. government blacklisted Huawei in May, deeming it a national security risk, meaning U.S. firms aren't allowed to sell the company technology without government approval. At the time, the U.S. exempted a narrow list of products and services. That exemption would have expired Monday, but the Commerce Department extended it for another 90 days. Why Los Angeles Decided to Open Source its Future

Over a decade ago, Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst lamented the waste inherent in traditional enterprise IT, where every organization rolled their own systems and shared little. Now, there's an increasing trend toward open source, with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation taking the lead in building out the Mobility Data Specification (MDS) to manage the influx of dockless e-scooters and bicycles. The project made sense for a city plagued by horrendous traffic, but it's the open sourcing of MDS that makes it powerful, with over 80 cities worldwide now embracing it.
