"World's Largest Tech Leadership Survey:" Tech Spend Outside IT Dept Creates Opportunities, but Opens Back Door to Risks |
63% of organizations now allow technology to be managed outside the IT department, a shift that brings with it both significant business advantages and increased privacy and security risks, reveals the 2019 Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO Survey. When IT spend is managed away from the direct control of the CIO, companies are twice as likely to have multiple security areas exposed, and more likely to become a victim of a major cyber-attack. The largest technology leadership survey in the world, analyzing responses from organizations with a combined technology spend of over $250 billion, reveals for those organizations where the IT team is formally involved in decision making around business-led IT, business advantages include improving time to market new products (52% more likely to be 'significantly better than their competitors') and employee experience (38% more likely to be 'significantly better than their competitors'). However, 43% of companies are not formally involving IT in those business-led IT decisions. (Read Press Release, 6/12/19)

House Opens Tech Antitrust Inquiry |
A congressional investigation into the power of big tech companies began last week with bipartisan concern from lawmakers that the government's lax oversight of the industry may be doing more harm than good. In its first hearing about the power held by Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple, lawmakers focused on the decline of the news industry. They said they were troubled that the online digital advertising market, which is dominated by Google and Facebook, had siphoned off too much revenue from news organizations. The hearing was the start of the House Judiciary Committee's inquiry into possible anticompetitive behavior by big tech companies, part of a rising wave of federal scrutiny of the industry. The House committee plans several hearings, depositions and interviews with competitors over the next 18 months. In addition, the Justice Department and the FTC, the two top antitrust agencies, recently divided antitrust oversight over Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google. Numerous state attorneys general are also preparing inquiries into the biggest tech companies. (Read Article: New York Times, 6/11/19)
